Just a few things about the Epimediums

Common names: Barren-worts, Bishops hats, Fairy wings and Horny goat weed. They are referring to the flowers aspect or to the assumed medicinal properties of some species.

Family: Berberidaceae.

Main attributes: Delightful, highly adaptable, undemanding.

It is always interesting to see which plants become popular and why some others do not. We have been surprised that Epimediums have not become a must have plant. They have a lot of attributes to recommend their use in the garden: in size they come from tiny plants a few inches across to ones with 5" leaves and the spring colour of the leaves can be spectacular, ranging from mottled brown to flesh pink. The flowers also come in a wide range of forms and a varied selections of colours and bicolour. As garden inhabitants the vast majority are well behaved and content in a lightly shaded spot in a humusy soil. Some species make magnificent ground covers and a number of them are evergreen. If the old foliage is clipped to the ground in early spring, the flowers can be better appreciated.

At Lost Horizons you will find the most extensive Epimedium plant collection from Ontario and maybe from Canada, thanks to Larry's efforts, perseverance and love towards a plant genus much under- appreciated - we hope not for a long time. The following images will speak better in their favour than a thousand words. For a detailed list of species and more informations please refer to our Catalogue. Enjoy !
